The Mumfords
For the Mumford's, raising cattle is a lifestyle. This family's hardwork and dedication to the industry sustains their 5th generation farm.
Established in the 1940s, Mumford Farms is a 5th generation farm owned and operated by Charlie (father), Taler (son), and Tyler (son) Mumford. Mumford Farms is located in Casstown, Ohio. One of Sakura’s first producers, the Mumford’s partnered with the Sakura team in 2017. Charlie reminisces on how their operation started at around 30 to 40 head of cattle per year to now being one of Sakura’s largest producers.
On the Mumford farm, sustainable and holistic practices are employed in several ways. The farm operates on a three-crop rotation of corn, soybeans, and wheat, which not only benefits the soil, but also provides feed and bedding for the cattle. Also, manure from the cattle is utilized as fertilizer for the fields. The Mumford’s share that their fields have gained so much organic matter from this practice, they no longer need to add any synthetic fertilizers.
Mumford Farms is the true definition of a family farm - as every member of the family is involved. Taler Mumford explains, “It’s hard work, but it’s also family time if that’s how you want to look at it. We get to work day-in and day-out with our family, and hopefully one day we pass it on”. Tyler Mumford continues, “It’s about being able to do what we’ve always done, and what our great grandpa did before us”.
The trio take great pride in how their livestock is raised and want to be fully transparent with the consumers about their processes. In addition to following the strict Sakura protocol on feeding and care for the cattle, the Mumford’s have gone above and beyond and had the cattle barn equipped with roller brushes that the cattle continually use to scratch their backs, as well as a radio that plays continually to help them stay relaxed. Charlie encourages consumers to go out and actually see where your food comes from.
