WLWT5 News: Homegrown Beef Now Available in Cincinnati

You may see a new item pop up on your restaurant menu or at your local butcher shop.

It's called Wagyu. It's a Japanese cattle, which originally came to the United States in the '70s.

The cattle is now being raised at select farms in Ohio. Those farms follow strict guidelines provided by the Sakura Wagyu Farms program.

One of those farms can be found about an hour and a half outside of Cincinnati in West Alexandria. Voge Farms owner Fred Voge said the process is unique.

"The beauty of this program, in my opinion, is you look at these cattle and the cattle in the pen behind them -- I've never had to put a needle in any of these cattle for health issues or anything like that, which is unique," said Fred.

According to the sales and project manager of Sakura Wagyu Farms, the meat has similarities to salmon.

"The fat in Wagyu breed is high in omega-3s and high in monounsaturated fat. So it's almost like eating a piece of salmon. So it has those added benefits that these other breeds of cattle do not have," said Tori Trbovich.

Where can you get this?

Wyoming Meat Market is selling a variety of cuts from Voge Farms. Owner Jim Gelhausen has been with the shop for decades. Traditionally, the market specialized in prime beef. Now it's the Wagyu.

He described the taste as over the top.

"Rich, very buttery flavor that ... is over the top," he said.
